Ask a Budtender: First-Time Buyer Questions Answered

Your first trip to a dispensary can feel exciting and a little intimidating. With so many products, strains, and terms floating around, it’s easy to feel unsure of where to start.

At Remedy Room, we’re all about keeping things simple, welcoming, and educational, so your first dispensary visit feels relaxed and enjoyable.

We sat down with one of our budtenders, Janette Ruiz, to answer the most common first-time buyer questions we hear from our Jurupa Valley community.

Read on for advice from a friend who’s been there, with a bit of extra insider knowledge.

What should I bring for my first dispensary visit?

Before you head in, make sure you’re ready with the basics. Most dispensaries, including Remedy Room, are cash-only because of federal banking laws.

We always recommend that you bring a few essentials so your visit goes smoothly:

  • Cash: Many dispensaries can’t process card payments. But don’t worry, we’ve got ATMs on-site if you need them.
  • Valid ID: You must be 21+ and have a government-issued ID ready at check-in.
  • Shopping list or goals: It helps to jot down what you’re looking for, whether it’s relaxation, energy, or better sleep.

Arriving with these in hand helps you skip any hiccups at the counter so you can focus on finding the right option for you.

How do I choose the right cannabis product for me?

When you walk in, it helps to have a goal in mind. Maybe you want to unwind after a long day, sleep better, or just feel a little lighter.

Knowing what you’re hoping to feel helps us point you toward the right options, whether that’s flower, edibles, vapes, or topicals. Here’s how Janette explains it:

“[When we know] what your goal is and how you’d like to feel, budtenders are happy to educate you on what each product can do for you.”

We’ll break down the effects, timing, and potency so you can make a choice that feels right. Here’s a quick look at what we usually help you consider:

  • Effects: What kind of experience do you want, relaxing, uplifting, creative, or balanced?
  • Timing: How fast or slow do you want it to hit? Some products work right away, while others take time.
  • Potency: How strong should it be based on your comfort level or experience?

This way, we can match you with products that not only fit your goals but also feel comfortable and enjoyable from the start.

What should I avoid before visiting a dispensary?

A little research is great because it can help you get familiar with what’s out there. But don’t stress over memorizing everything you find online.

And while it might sound obvious, showing up high can make your visit confusing or overwhelming.

This is what she says you should avoid before your first visit:

“Some product research is good and can help the interaction go smoother. But coming in under the influence might impair your judgment if you’re not used to the high.”

We always recommend coming in with a clear head and an open mind. That way, you can ask questions, explore options, and save your first session for when you’re comfortable at home.

How do I talk to a budtender as a first-timer?

We get it. Approaching the counter for the first time can feel a little nerve-wracking. But here’s the thing: we love helping new customers.

Let us know it’s your first visit, and we’ll take it from there. Janette always encourages first-time customers to be honest:

“It’s best to let your budtender know right away that it’s your first time. That way, we can start with a quick tour of all the different varieties of products we carry, then break it down from there. We’re happy to explain how each type works, what the effects are, and how many options we offer.”

We’re here to make it feel easy — no pressure, no judgment, just good conversation and solid recommendations.

How can I find the best strain or product for my needs?

Everyone’s cannabis experience is different, and that’s what makes it fun.

What works for your friend might not be your perfect match, and that’s okay. According to Janette, the key is open communication about your goals, tolerance, and past experiences.

Here’s her take on how to make that happen:

“By letting your budtender know your goal and any past experiences, we can make sure to recommend something that fits and avoid what didn’t work before.”

We’ll help you dial in your experience so every visit brings you closer to your ideal product.

What’s the right dispensary etiquette for beginners?

If you’re new to dispensaries, there’s no need to feel nervous. We want you to feel at home here, and that means asking questions, exploring products, and taking your time.

Janette suggests asking your budtender for the rules when it comes to handling products:

“Taking your time and asking any questions you have is the best way to talk to your budtender, that’s how we can give you the best recommendations and make sure you leave with exactly what you’re looking for. When handling products, it’s always best to check our policy first. At Remedy Room, we let customers open and smell flower samples for most brands, but if it’s not a display product, the jar stays sealed. That way, everyone gets to enjoy a clean and consistent shopping experience.”

We like to think of the shop as a friendly hangout. You’re welcome to browse, learn, and chat with us while we keep everything clean and organized for everyone.

What should I do after my first cannabis purchase?

Once you get home, take it slow and set yourself up for a chill experience. Janette always suggests finding a comfortable spot, being around people you trust, and giving yourself time to see how your body reacts.

Here’s her advice when trying a new product:

“Make sure you’re in a safe space with people you trust. Keep the rest of your day open just in case the product hits stronger than expected.”

Everyone reacts differently, and that’s part of what makes finding your groove so personal. Pay attention to how you feel, and when you stop by next time, let us know how it went. We’ll help you fine-tune from there.
